Whereas, The UA system does not have a nondiscrimination policy for sexual orientation nor for gender identity;

Whereas, All UA staff and students should have written confirmation that the schools will not tolerate discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity;

Whereas, Changing the policy would help prevent law suits that could be brought against the UA system if an incident should occur, and would in turn save the UA system time and money;

Whereas, The UA schools can set a standard for the rest of the school systems in Alaska and America showing that the UA system will not tolerate discrimination of any kind; and

Whereas, Students will know that they are valued as community members just as the other groups under the policy are;

Whereas, The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District has implemented a similar nondiscrimination policy, which reads: “the board is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination in relation to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis of discrimination prohibited by local, state, or federal law, except where a bona fide requirement may lawfully disqualify an individual;” and

Whereas, It's called a nondiscrimination policy; now therefore be it,
