Whereas, There has been an outcry regarding “the exclusively online bookstore” from students and professors alike;
Whereas, Back ordered books and shipping delays impede education and are an inconvenience to students and professors;
Whereas, Priority and express mail are expensive and inconvenient to the buyer;
Whereas, Students who receive financial aid are inconvenienced;
Whereas, Domestic shipping arrives in 2-6 weeks;
Whereas, Not all students trust online shopping;
Whereas, The “exclusively online bookstore” not only negatively impacts many UAF students, but also many TVCC students;
Whereas, Many students create their semester schedule upon arrival to UAF or TVCC, especially new and first year students;
Whereas, An “exclusively online bookstore” limits first-semester freshman, as well as, new non-traditional students, and academic advising;
Whereas, Many students have their courses, plans, career goals, and majors changed and/or rearranged throughout a single semester for a number of miscellaneous reasons, not limited to wait listing;
Whereas, As quoted from online, the return and exchange policies “may vary”;
Whereas, UAF departments and professors have spent untold hours and resources scanning, printing, and organizing information to minimize the negative impacts of the “exclusively online bookstore”, which refutes the bookstore’s original claim the “exclusively online bookstore” will save the campus money;
Whereas, As noted above, the current system of an “exclusively online bookstore” is inefficient to UAF and TVCC students educational and logistical success for many reasons;
Whereas, The bookstore’s original argument, “The main reasons are to provide students with improved service and lower price options,” have failed;
Whereas, One must also recognize the efficiency and convenience to the bookstore from an elimination of warehouse, van, and excess text book return expenses; now therefore be it
Resolved, That ASUAF support a “hybrid bookstore” to help accommodate UAF and TVCC students, while compromising with our bookstore, which is explained below:,/p>
The hybrid bookstore will:
1. Supply only 100 and 200 level books that have been readopted for students to buy on campus.
i
2. Provide only 300 and 400+ level text books for students to buy online.
3. Be fully operational by Spring 2010.
